Stretching for more than 13 km along the eastern shore, East Coast Park is where Singapore comes to barbecue, cycle and skate at weekends.
The 180-hectare park is a long ribbon of beach, casuarina shade and cycle track facing the ships anchored in the Singapore Strait. It is divided into Areas A to H, with landmarks such as the Cyclist Park in Area D and the Xtreme Skatepark in Area F. Bike and skate rental shops line the route, which forms part of the Round Island Route, a planned 150 km loop.
The park is open 24 hours and free, though parking is charged. Ride at sunrise or after 5 pm, when the sea breeze takes the edge off the heat, then eat at East Coast Lagoon Food Village, opened on reclaimed land in 1978. NParks-permitted barbecue pits here are exempt from the ban on public drinking from 10.30 pm to 7 am.
