Haji Lane

Murals, boutiques and bars.

Reputedly Singapore’s narrowest street, just over 4 metres wide in parts, Haji Lane squeezes boutiques, bars and wall murals into one slim corner of Kampong Glam.

The lane runs through Kampong Glam, the historic Malay and Arab quarter gazetted for conservation in 1989. The quarter was long linked to the hajj: in the late 1800s up to 10,000 pilgrims a year passed through Singapore, many lodging on nearby Bussorah Street while they waited for ships. Today Haji Lane is packed with independent boutiques, small bars and wall murals.

Come in the late afternoon and stay into the evening, when Kampong Glam is at its liveliest. Pair the lane with the textile shops of Arab Street, a visit to Masjid Sultan, closed to visitors on Fridays, and the stalls of Bugis Street, a short walk away near Bugis MRT.
