Tekka Centre

Biryani and tandoor naan in Little India.

Across the road from Little India MRT, Tekka Centre carries on a market tradition that began here in 1915, and its hawker stalls are known above all for biryani.

The original Kandang Kerbau Market, named after the old cattle district whose name means buffalo enclosure, opened in the first week of August 1915 where Serangoon Road meets Bukit Timah Road. Stallholders moved into the new complex across the road on 3 May 1981. It was called Zhujiao Centre from November 1981, under the Speak Mandarin Campaign, and became Tekka Centre in 2000.

The hawker centre has many halal and vegetarian stalls and is known for biryani. Try Delhi Lahori (#01-266), which holds a Bib Gourmand, for tandoor naan and kebabs, and look out for Malay dishes too. Come early in the morning, then walk on along Serangoon Road to the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple.
