West of the Botanic Gardens, Holland V gathers its shophouses and small malls around two short lanes, a neighbourhood that fills up in the evenings.
Holland V, as Singaporeans call it, is a crescent of shophouses and small malls around Lorong Liput and Lorong Mambong. Holland Road is said to be named after Hugh Holland, an architect and early resident. Next door, Chip Bee Gardens was built as married quarters for the British military; from the 1990s expatriates moved in, and the bars followed. With Dempsey, it is where the evenings beyond Orchard Road are spent.
The newest arrival is One Holland Village, which opened in December 2023. Holland Village has its own station on the Circle Line, and Dempsey and the Botanic Gardens are a short taxi ride away, so the gardens by day and Holland V or Dempsey by night make an easy pairing for an unhurried day in the west of the city centre.
