Trains from the Malay Peninsula once ran through the heart of Singapore; their old line is now a 24 km green corridor from Woodlands to Tanjong Pagar.
When the railway land returned to Singapore in 2011, the line became the Rail Corridor, a 24 km ecological route from Woodlands to Tanjong Pagar. South of Rifle Range Road the trail is paved; north towards Kranji it turns to grass and gravel, a rustic stretch opened as Rail Corridor (North) in February 2023. The trail is flat, which makes it a good walk with children.
A good place to start is Bukit Timah Railway Station, built in 1932 and one of two surviving railway stations in Singapore. It reopened as a heritage gallery and community node on 1 July 2022, with restored track-switching levers, the old ticket booth and replica wagons, and the neighbouring Railway Staff Quarters house the 1932 Story Café.
The corridor is open 24/7 but unlit, to protect nocturnal wildlife, so leave by nightfall or carry a torch. Since 9 March 2026 the southern section between the Henderson Road and Spooner Road accesses has been closed for trail works; check railcorridor.nparks.gov.sg for notices.
