Opened in 1971 as Singapore's first hawker centre with a garden setting, Newton Food Centre comes into its own after dark, when the seafood stalls are busiest.

Newton Food Centre opened in 1971, Singapore's first hawker centre with a garden setting, in the year the country began moving its street hawkers into purpose-built centres. Upgraded in 2006, it stands at 500 Clemenceau Avenue North, close to Orchard, and is busiest at night. The classic orders are barbecue seafood, oyster omelette and fried carrot cake, the radish cake fried with egg.

Alliance Seafood (#01-27, Bib Gourmand) cooks seafood to order with barbecue, sambal, black pepper or salted egg yolk, and its cereal butter prawns are a highlight. Heng (#01-28) is the stop for carrot cake, and Hup Kee Fried Oyster Omelette (#01-73) joined the Bib Gourmand list in 2026. Return your tray when you finish: since 2021 it has been the law.
