Its old Malay name, Pulau Blakang Mati, translates as “Behind Death”; in 1970 it was renamed Sentosa, for tranquillity, and became Singapore’s playground.

The island covers some 500 hectares. Universal Studios Singapore fits seven zones, Minion Land among them, into a single day, and the Singapore Oceanarium, opened in July 2025 at three times the size of the old S.E.A. Aquarium, has manta rays and zebra sharks behind a 36-metre-wide panel. Fort Siloso, free to visit, turned its guns inland in February 1942.

The beaches face the Singapore Strait, so every view is framed by ships at anchor. Siloso Beach in the west is the liveliest; Palawan suits families, with a rope bridge to the Southernmost Point of Continental Asia; Tanjong Beach is the quietest. Most visitors start at VivoCity above HarbourFront MRT and walk in free on the Boardwalk or ride the Sentosa Express.
