In Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park the Kallang River has been let out of its concrete canal, and now winds between wildflower banks through a park more than 3 km long.

The Kallang River once ran in a concrete canal along the edge of this heartland park. Today it meanders between wildflower banks through 62 hectares, more than 3 km from end to end, and wildlife has followed: more than 90 bird species, including the purple heron, and over 30 butterfly species have been recorded. Climb Recycle Hill for the view, or walk round the pond of more than 2 hectares.

The park is also otter country. The Bishan family of smooth-coated otters, at its peak 14 strong and the largest group recorded, became national celebrities and in 2016 was chosen as an icon of the nation's 51st birthday. Watch them from a distance and give them space: otters have bitten people who crowded them.
