In front of Changi’s Terminal 1, a glass dome holds gardens, shops and restaurants, and at its heart water falls 40 metres through seven storeys.
Jewel Changi Airport sits in the public area, linked directly to Terminal 1 and a 5–10-minute walk from Terminals 2 and 3. Jewel bills the HSBC Rain Vortex as the world’s tallest indoor waterfall: it plunges 40 metres from an oculus in the roof and flows daily from 10 am to 10 pm. Seeing the waterfall and the gardens around it costs nothing.
Around it rises the Forest Valley, an indoor garden of more than 900 trees and palms and about 60,000 shrubs, open around the clock, with two half-hour walking trails. After dark the falling water becomes a screen for free light-and-music shows at 8 pm and 9 pm, with a 10 pm show on Fridays to Sundays, public holidays and their eves.
Transit passengers must clear immigration to visit. If you are flying out of Changi, budget time for Jewel before check-in.
